Do you ever hear a song and it brings you back to another place and time. There are songs that will come on while I am in the car that will have me daydreaming about this time or that one.
It's kind of nice.
Or not.
Here are just a few examples:
Flathead - the Fretellis. Yes, the ipod commercial. But not just the ipod commercial. The ipod commercial played 4,000 times on the big screen at the Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas. My husband was on a business trip and our 5 month old and I accompanied him. Yeah, I realized the first night that was a mistake. Anyhow, while my husband worked my daughter and I walked around a lot and the mall was right by the hotel and I swear they just played the commercial and that song over and over and over again.
Song 2 - Blur. I had just starting dating this guy and his college friends from Wisconsin had come out to visit. I don't remember anything about that night, except driving home with the windows and sunroof open blasting and singing this song. And I remember thinking it was funny because everyone in the car seemed to be different, but we all knew the words to this song. We may have been drunk, I don't remember.
Mr. Jones - The Counting Crows. Spring 2004, weekend of our Junior Prom. Yeah, we were cool singing this song every 10 minutes because that's how often they played it on the radio. I remember singing it with my friend and this guy who I dated, but then broke up with and she made out with shortly after our "relationship". It's ok, she and I are still friends. He was a sloppy kisser and not worth ruining a friendship.
Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers. My first boyfriend. I was a freshman, he was a senior. I still wasn't cool. This was "our song". Little did we know it was about heroin addicts.
Jesse's Girl - Rick Springfield. My aunt is 7 years older than me and when I was like 8 or 9 I thought she was the coolest thing and she loved Rick and this song. And so did I because I wanted to be just like her. I remember it also confused me a little because her name was Jessica (Jessie), but the Jessie in the song was a guy. I wasn't that bright.
You Gotta Be - Des'ree. My first job at the Ground Round and that awful music station they made us have on. This song was on like every half hour and when you work an eight hour shift, it can drive you a wee bit batty. But I remember everyone knew the words and would sing as they walked into the kitchen. Even the guys, which is pretty funny.
And any Clash song reminds me of my husband. He's a huge Clash fan and will tell you how he saw them at Bond's in 1981 and Shea stadium in 1982. Both apparently big concerts in Clash history. What do I know, I was 4 at the time. I do know that when he saw this on Dancing With The Stars, he wanted to vomit. And I still feel bad that I was the one who broke the news to him that Joe Strummer had died. We weren't dating that long when it happened and I don't think I was as sympathetic as he would have liked. I think I may have laughed at him and said "are you going to cry?"
Coma Girl - Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. Yes, it's a song! When my daughter was a newborn, every time I nursed her she would fall asleep within minutes. My husband started calling her coma girl and then later would sing it to her. If she joins a motorcycle gang, it's his fault.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to update a playlist on my ipod.
